Tokyo Collapse: Awakening of the Oni

Tokyo Collapse

This video explores the theme of earthquakes and natural disasters in Japan, where memory, myth, and future uncertainty collide. Centered on the predicted Nankai Trough Earthquake in July 2025, the work serves as both a visual warning and a reflection on past and future catastrophes. At its core stands the “Tokyo Earthquake Oni,” a symbolic creature constructed from the landmarks, infrastructure, and cultural icons of Tokyo.

It carries the memory of the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake, one of the most devastating disasters in recent history, and represents unresolved grief and collective fear. This Oni connects multiple timelines—from ancient folklore that believed giant catfish (Namazu) caused earthquakes, held down by the god Takemikazuchi, to modern science and the unease of a future still unknown. It becomes a bridge between past, present, and what is yet to come, reminding us that these timelines are not separate; they live within us.

In the face of nature, humanity is small, and disaster repeats itself. This work urges us to recognize the warnings, remember the sorrow, and prepare for what may come next.
